Andrew's garden blog

I love our garden. The plants, the wildlife, the seasons. These are some observations about it, not from an expert but from an enthusiast. And a few other ramblings besides.

Earth day around the world

Earth dayEarth day is a huge phenomenon now and I'm pleased.  It is a bit US-centric but that's a good thing, because despite President Obama's best efforts the US still has a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the western world in moving to prevent climate change.

My little picture for Earth Day shows the world upside down in a glass cloche, which is providing much needed protection for my tender cucumbers.

Too cold for garden hammocks

Cherry blossomThe fab weather on Saturday made me grab my shorts and the garden hammocks, but come Sunday it was back to jumper and jeans.  And last night I was contemplating protecting our new peach tree with fleece, but cloud cover was forecast so I decided to risk it.  As it turned out the temperature stayed well above freezing, but there is still plenty of time for another frost so my fleece is at the ready.

Hibernating in a hedghog house

Ladybird nesterHow good must hibernating be?  The downside is you miss Christmas of course, but the upside is not to be sniffed at.  If all goes to plan you miss the worst of the weather and wake up fully refreshed just as the daffs start poking through.

I nearly stepped on a hedgehog last week which had just emerged from its hedgehog house for a first forage.  It looked healthy and contented (much as Beatrix Potter would have wished for Mrs Tiggywinkle).  The ladybirds too seem to be more abundant than ever.  Seems like they have enjoyed their rest.
