Artesania Sorata

Fair trade alpaca from Bolivia

Artesania Sorata was established in 1978 as a cooperative with 2 goals. To build on the expertise of Bolivian artisans in manufacturing garments from natural fibres and to improve the standard of living for Bolivians. Artesania Sorata is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.

Thirty years on and it is clear that Artesania Sorata has achieved this and more. 150 indigenous families are now involved from El Alto and Sorata, which are poor rural areas north of La Paz, and successful programs have been established to help adult literacy, health care and hearing for disadvantaged children. These important programs have been funded by selling alpaca garments like the alpaca wrist warmers and the alpaca scarves.

Although a lot has been achieved there is still a huge amount to be done. Artesania Sorata's dream is of more equality within international society They believe that everyone has the right to have a nourishing diet, good health care and a positive outlook for the future. Artesania Sorata continues to work towards this goal.
