The history of the garden deck chair can be traced as far back as the ancient Egyptians, but it was John Thomas Moore in 1886 who patented the ‘adjustable folding chair’, the first true garden deck chair. He manufactured them in Macclesfield and was responsible for many of the chairs supplied to the famous passenger liners like The Titanic. From the 1880s they became common place on ships and at the seaside. Since the 1940s deckchairs have made their way onto lawns, cricket pitches, tennis courts, patios and almost anywhere where portable, robust but above all comfortable seating is required.
Polycotton. We have thought long and hard about the virtues of polycotton vs pure cotton. It’s a difficult call. These fabrics are 19% polythene, which is a non-renewable material and therefore bad for the environment. However, polycotton is very hard wearing which means that the lifetime of the canvas is considerably longer, particularly if it is to be left outside. For those of you who take your chairs inside every evening, a pure cotton fabric may be preferable. But for those who are not so well disciplined, you will have to replace the canvas less often if it has a synthetic component. Your call.
When the deckchair is flat, it is 109cm long and 50.5cm wide.
