All these crops like to be free from shade and weeds. The seeds will also benefit from watering for a few days after sowing.

The steps to make a vegetable garden start with a layer of manure or compost dug into the soil during the winter months, which is enough to maintain the fertility of most soils. If you add the compost early enough, the worms will even do the digging for you. Carrots are the only crops which do not like freshly manured ground. If the winter has passed and you haven’t had time to add compost, don’t worry. These seeds should all produce a decent crop on most soils without much help, although further crops will suffer if the soil is not replenished in some way.
