Every garden should have a ladybird box. Throughout its year long life a ladybird eats around 5,000 aphids, which is music to the ears of any gardener. They huddle together to try to survive the winter and this bug box provides an ideal refuge. The main breeding season is May/June.
The bamboo tubes provide a natural home for mason bees and other solitary bees as well as for a variety of over wintering insects. These are necessary for pollinating fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers. They are not aggressive and are safe with children and pets.
Mention bees and most people think of the 'social bees' - swarms of honey bees, or gangs of bumblebees. In fact, the vast majority of bees are solitary, living out their lives as single bees, provisioning single nest cells, rather than working with many other bees to raise huge numbers of offspring in shared nests.
