Wood is a truly green source of fuel, because, unlike fossil fuels, it does not release any extra carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. However, this is true only if the trees we use up are continually replaced, so if you cut down a tree replant one and if you buy firewood you should ask if it is sustainable.
Hardwood, which is usually from a deciduous tree like oak or apple, will burn more slowly and hotter than softwood, so you will have to make fewer trips to the woodshed if you burn hardwood. Softwood like pine and larch is best used for kindling. If you get a choice, apple wood is the best for heat and aroma.
All firewood burns best if it has been kept dry for at least a year. This also means it is far lighter to carry. Damp wood will still burn, as those of you who have combed the beach to make a spontaneous barbeque will know, but the fire needs to be hotter before it will catch.
