The pine is from managed forests in Scandinavia and is pressure treated to extend its life.
The beehive should be positioned on a flat surface somewhere that makes is easy for you to drop in your peelings.
All gardeners have different tips for making the best compost. Here are mine:
- Add organic ingredients as and when you have them (vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, pet rabbit bedding etc).
- Do not add any meat or anything too woody. And beware of tea bags made of nylon (yes, really!) and biodegrdeable plastic bags which can take years to compost.
- If it is very dry, add a bucket of water.
- If most of what you compost is kitchen waste, mix it with egg boxes, kitchen paper or loo rolls.
After 6 months the bottom of the heap should be composted. Either remove the bottom layer of compost via the door panel or stir and then give it another 3 months.
