One of the many benefits of coir compost is that it provides a viable alternative to peat. For far too long commercial and amateur gardeners have relied on peat for compost and as a consequence 94% of the peatbogs in the UK have been damaged or destroyed.
This is serious because peatbogs are a unique habitat for wildlife that have been thousands of years in the making. They won’t simply reappear once the destruction stops.
In additoin, peatbogs provide valuable carbon and water storage. Globally, peatlands cover only around 3% of the land area, yet they store approximately twice as much carbon as the world’s forest vegetation.
