Beech trees are a really important part of mixed broad-leaved forests in Europe. Without them other trees would struggle as they would loose out to competition from weeds. This is due to a process known as allelopathy. Fallen beech leaves produce allelochemicals, which suppress the growth of weeds. This is why taking a walk through a beech wood is such a joy – there are fewer weeds than in other woodland.
