The search for an ecologically sustainable plastic has been a long one. Matching the versatility and price of petrochemical polymers has not been easy. At last husk and fibre plastics are emerging which do just that.
Bamboo husk is a by product of the bamboo processing industry. The husk is ground down to a fine powder before being combined with an organic dye and a water soluble polymer. The mixture is then hot pressed into molds.
Bamboo is enduring, fast growing and a truly renewable resource. It is the fastest growing plant on the planet and is harvested from controlled stands with an astounding growth cycle of three to five years. Bamboo is not in fact a wood, but a species of grass, of which there are more than 1200 known species. The bamboo used in this process is not the species consumed by pandas.
