Herb growing tips:
- Most herbs like well drained, poor soil, so don't be tempted to fill the planter with rich compost. Mix in grit and soil and add some stones or broken bricks first.
- Think about whether you want herbs all year or just in the summer. Rosemary, thyme and sage can be picked all year. Basil and parsley are summer only.
- Some herbs will cope with shade, such as mint or rosemary, but most prefer sun.
- Water well but not too often. An occasional soaking is better than a frequent shower.
- Some herbs are best propogated from seed (basil, parsley), some by splitting (mint, chives) and some by cuttings (rosemary, thyme).
