Solitary bees are difficult to describe as there are many species that vary widely in their appearance. However, the good news is that they are invariably excellent pollinators and very poor at stinging. Only the females sting (the males don’t live long anyway) and even then very occasionally and feebly.
Some solitary bees resemble small honeybees, others small bumblebees, while others could be mistaken for small wasps. Solitary bees differ from honeybees and bumblebees in not being social insects. Soon after hatching the female is mated and will then spend the rest of her life on her own collecting pollen and laying eggs.
