  • Description

A slingshot or catapult is invariably tucked in the back pocket of a traditional cartoon character out to take on the world. They are a cartoonists short-hand for outdoor fun and adventure, with a hint of mischief. For boys and men who like the outdoors, a catapult is a great gift.

As long as they are used responsibly, catapults (or slingshots if you're American) can become a much-loved outdoor essential. In addition to games such as shooting at cans and bottles, a catapult is a practical way to launch fish bait into water and seed bombs onto inaccessible rough ground.

These slingshots are handmade in the UK from native timber collected in southern England. Each slingshot is labelled with the type of timber and the wood where it was found. As each slingshot is handmade from a naturally occurring branch, sizes and colour tones will vary.

Sling shots or catapults should never be used as weapons. They should never be aimed at people or animals!

    Typically 25cm in length

Catapults have been around for thousands of years. The Greeks and Romans used them like bows and in Medieval times they were used as siege weapons against castles and fortresses. Catapults continued to be used in warfare up until the first world war when they were used to jettison hand grenades from trenches (in the hope of landing them in the enemies trench). Since then though their use has been limited to non-military hobbyists much like archery.

Catapults can be dangerous if misused. Please abide by the following safety advice:

    1. Never aim or fire your catapult at people or pets.
    2. Never attempt to catch objects released by catapults.
    3. Always look to be certain that no none is in the path of a released catapult.
    4. Do not leave catapult armed and ready to fire.
    5. Always establish a safe firing range for your catapult, free of breakable objects, humans and pet traffic.
    6. Be aware that the released arm of the catapult is moving at great speed and power.
    7. Do not reach into the path of a moving catapult.
    8. Wear eye protection when using your catapult.
    9. Always stand in a safe place when releasing an object.
    10. Do not use your catapult indoors without adult supervision and permission.
    11. Do not allow anyone to use your catapult unless you have instructed them how to do so safely.
    12. Always launch soft objects. Do not fire coins, rocks, glass, etc.
