Corn brooms have long been popular in the countries of south east Europe, such as Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary and in recent years they have become popular in northern Europe too.  The reason is that they are the best all-round brooms.  They are an effective sweeper of dust, litter and leaves, and as such are invaluable in the home as well as in the garden or yard.

The corn broom head is made from a type of sorghum known as rice straw.  The seeds of the sorghum plant are used for cattle fodder and the stems are dried to make straw for brooms.  The straw is thin, light and strong, which is what you want to make the best brooms.

    Thrilled

    Review by Penelope Croucher

I am thrilled to have finally found this Corn Broom. I had been looking for one for ages. It is light and easy to use as gets into crevices and around the base of heavy pots without having to move them. It is beautifully made in the traditional way and arrived promptly and very well packaged. Good old fashioned service for a good old fashioned item that made sweeping the paved garden this week a joy! It is not expensive and would make a lovely present for keen gardeners. I'm sure I'll be back for more in future. Many thanks. (Posted on 28/01/2017)

Delighted. Thank you. Beautifully packed - and I thought you’d just tie a label on it and put the head of the broom in a plastic bag! (Posted on 31/10/2016)

    Gernot Redecker

Brush and broom maker in northern Germany

Friedrich Redecker was born in northern Germany in 1908 and started going blind from the age of four.  In those days making brushes was the standard trade for the blind, so that is what Friedrich set about doing.  Only he was more successful than most and built a small brush and broom making business that supported his family and continued until his death at the age of 71.

After Friedrich’s death his youngest son Gernot took on the responsibility for winding down the business, but instead of bringing the business to a close discovered there was such high demand for the brushes at local fairs that he decided to expand.

Several decades later Fredrich’s son Felix has now joined the business and the range of brushes and brooms has expanded considerably.  As well as having a reputation for very high quality products, the family is also famous for its innovation, which happens at their dedicated ideas workshop. Their focus is on blending modern contemporary design with traditional materials and crafts.
