  • Description

Hanging bobbin with jute braid salvaged from Lancashire mills with natural jute twine.

Bobbin colours vary, but all are beautifully worn. A piece of British industrial history that makes an unusual and practical gift.

    Bobbins are typically 15cm high

I don't suppose anyone in Lancashire in the 19th Century could have forseen that 150 years later their bobbins would become the perfect stocking filler for gardeners!

The cotton mills used bobbins from the mechanisation of weaving and spinning in the mid 19th century. Many had coloured ends to distinguish between departments or the ply of the yarns that were to be wrapped round the bobbins. These coloured ends now have a wonderful worn patina.

Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads often called hessian. It grows best in warm and humid climates. Almost 85% of the world's jute cultivation is concentrated in the Ganges delta shared by Bangladesh and India.

Jute is a natural product requiring only the addition of oil to make it into hessian. In the past whale oil was commonly used, which is why Nutscene is based near the old whaling port of Dundee.

    Nutscene

    Nutscene

    Environmentally friendly gifts for gardeners

It all began in 1922 when the first spool of Nutscene was sold to a large local nursery by the jute merchants Robertson Ireland Ltd based in Dundee Scotland. A natural eco-friendly product which fast became the string of choice for gardeners throughout the UK. Hessian sacks soon followed, perfect for sack races.

The name Nutscene is derived from the famous green twine which, when tied around the plant cannot be seen thus "Not Seen".

Nutscene's product range today has been considerably expanded in partnership with a number of British craftsmen and women, thus supporting a large network of rural business throughout the UK. Products include oak plant labels and a natural pot brush.

Nutscene strives to use raw materials harvested from renewable and sustainable sources. All the jute twines are biodegradable and all wooden products are manufactured from environmentally managed forests in the UK.
