  • Description

The pleasures of runny honey are immense, but getting it from pot to plate can be a challenge.  Which is why the honey dipper or drizzler was invented.  It holds enough honey in its wooden grooves so that with a quick twizzle it’s possible to transport a generous dollop of honey to your toast without spilling a drop.  This honey dipper also benefits from a long handle so it can be left in a honey jar without fear of it submerging.

These honey dippers are designed for use with runny honey.  Over time all pure honey crystallises, which is a natrual process, but it can be returned to its runny state with gentle heating.  Never overheat honey though otherwise some of the wonderful aromatics and flavour will be lost.

Made in Germany from oiled olive wood

    16cm

The runniness of pure honey is largely dependent on the type of nectar that the bees forage from the plants they visit.  If the nectar contains a high proportion of glucose, as it does in the case of oil seed rape, then it will crystallise very quickly.  On the other hand if it contains a high proportion of fructose, which is true of most garden flowers, then it will stay runny for longer.  In addition the cooler the temperature the honey is stored at the faster it crystallises.

    Gernot Redecker

Brush and broom maker in northern Germany

Friedrich Redecker was born in northern Germany in 1908 and started going blind from the age of four.  In those days making brushes was the standard trade for the blind, so that is what Friedrich set about doing.  Only he was more successful than most and built a small brush and broom making business that supported his family and continued until his death at the age of 71.

After Friedrich’s death his youngest son Gernot took on the responsibility for winding down the business, but instead of bringing the business to a close discovered there was such high demand for the brushes at local fairs that he decided to expand.

Several decades later Fredrich’s son Felix has now joined the business and the range of brushes and brooms has expanded considerably.  As well as having a reputation for very high quality products, the family is also famous for its innovation, which happens at their dedicated ideas workshop. Their focus is on blending modern contemporary design with traditional materials and crafts.
