  • Description

Peony support rings are not only a practical way to support your herbaceous plants, they are also an architectural feature that will add interest to your garden in the winter. They look stunning on a frosty winter morning when the herbaceous border is feeling sorry for itself.

These peony plant supports are designed for herbaceous peonies which die back in the autumn and need supporting from late spring. However, they work just as well supporting other perennials such shrub roses, oriental poppies, delphiniums, hollyhocks and foxgloves.

The finish of these metal plant supports is rust. The top ring is slightly larger than the second ring so as to make more space for the flower heads.

    80cm tall, 50cm diameter.

    Paul Stanton

Artisan maker of rusted metal peony support rings

The north of England is world famous for its exceptional craft and manufacturing industries, through a history that stretches back 250 years. Paul Stanton is building on this heritage. His early working life was as a lathe operator where he learnt the essential metal working skills of cutting, bending and shaping steel into any manner of forms. This grounding enabled him to start his own business near Leeds in the 1990s, which specialises in metal plant supports, particularly peony rings.

Making perfectly round hoops for the peony supports requires a huge amount of skill and pressure, particularly as Paul doesn’t apply any heat. It’s his years of practice and his ability to make his own tools that enable him to do this. Each pair of perfectly round hoops, one slightly larger than the other, are welded to five mild steel rods, making for very attractive, sturdy and practical plant supports. Not so long ago these would all have been powder coated black, but these days everyone wants rust. “You have to give customers what they want”, says Paul, “and if it makes my life easier too then so much the better!”
