  • Description

Wood is by far the best material for seed trays. It provides seeds with the best possible start in life. I'm not sure whether it is because wood provides more insulation than plastic or whether slugs like it less, but my seedlings always do better in wooden seed trays.

These plant trays are a traditional design, with a slatted base and narrow gaps to allow drainage.

Made from waste pine collected from local builders. Comes in two classic seed tray designs, each 5cm deep and each compatible with the seed tray dribber:
    - Small, 29cm x 17cm, £7
    - Large, 38cm x 25cm, £8

If your seed trays do suffer from slug attacks then there are 101 different things you can do. My favourite ways to deter slugs are:

    - Half a grapefruit. It seems a shame to leave half a healthy grapefruit in the garden, so I suggest you eat most of it first.
    - Broken egg shells. Not sure whether its the sharp pieces or the texture that slugs don't like, but its an easy eco-friendly option.
    - Regular checks. Before you water your seed trays take a quick look underneath. That way your seedlings will be safe and you will resist the temptation to reach for the dreaded slug pellets.

Ken started out his working life as a heating and plumbing engineer, but for the last 30 years his passion has been carpentry, making rabbit hutches, averies and hen coops. Seed trays and vegetable racks are Ken's latest products, all made from waste wood donated by local builders.

Ken is also an avid collector. He has an impressive collection of parrots, including macaws, African greys, cockatoos, cockatiels and budgies, and an even more impressive collection of Terry Pratchett memorabilia. His house is an Aladins cave of books, characters, buildings and even a piece of the film set from the Colour of Magic. Its not just for Ken to enjoy though. He has 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren!
