  • Description

Cucumber straighteners were invented in the 1840s by the engineer George Stephenson.  As well as building the first railway to use steam locomotives, Stephenson found time to invent a solution to the age old problem of the curved cucumber.   Stephenson was so frustrated by his curved cucs that he commissioned glass straighteners to be made at his Newcastle steam engine factory.  The cucumber straighteners were a big hit and were soon supplied through the gardening catalogues of the period.  All the best Victorian kitchen gardens had glass cucumber straighteners and rhubarb forcers.

The glass tube serves both to keep the cucumber straight and to act as a mini-greenhouse.  All you have to do is pop the young fruit through the small hole, care for the plant as normal, then sit back and watch your long straight cucumber grow.
