Solitary bees are the unsung heroes of the pollinating world.  Unlike their more social cousins the honey bees which live in colonies of 20,000+, solitary bees live their lives largely on their own.  And yet they play just as important a role in pollinating flowers as honey bees and are far easier to house.  Solitary bees lay their eggs in the spring in cavities or tubes and then seal the tubes with mud.  The following spring the new bees emerge and as they don’t have stores or a family to defend they have no need to sting.

The clever contemporary design makes for a long lasting bee house that is attractive and easy to hang.  The outer white case is made of a robust composite of recycled plastic and clay that has two holes in the back wall so that it can be hung level or at 45 degrees (as shown).  The inner box is made from sustainable wood and bamboo, with holes of various sizes to suit a range of different solitary bee species.

The bee box is likely be busiest if it is hung on a wall or fence that gets partial or full sun.
