What is FSC
When we started Hen and Hammock in 2006 the UK was awash with wooden products made from timber that wasn’t certified as sustainable. It was clear to us that this was wrong and that we should ensure that all of our wooden products were from sustainable sources.
The situation is better now, with more retailers scrutinising their supply chain, but we are by no means out of the woods, so to speak. Deforestation and illegal logging is still a major problem in the Amazon basin, Central Africa and South East Asia and in Feb 2013 Interpol hauled in 50,000 cubic metres of illegal wood, which is 2,000 truckloads. This must have been destined for consumers somewhere!
So, it is still really important to be vigilant, to ask difficult questions of retailers and if you are a large organisation to have a sustainable timber procurement policy.
The two main international bodies for timber certification are the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). For each of our products that are certified as sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council you will see the FSC logo on the product page. Our FSC licence number is FSC®N001633.
Our products that are FSC certified include:
